what is anti Smash & grab film?
The industry standard in South Africa is to apply a 100-micron thick window film to the inside of the side windows and 50-micron film to the inside of the rear windscreen. The idea is that the film holds the shards of glass in place when the window shatters. The thicker gauge side window film is for protection, thinner gauge applied to rear windscreen is for aesthetic purposes only.
With smash & grab film, the side window stays in place on impact, slowing down the attacker's access to the vehicle, which offers protection to the occupants and belongings inside vehicle for a limited amount of time.

about smash & grab attacks
Tempered Glass, which is used for the side windows of most vehicles, has extremely high strength and durability, but will shatter into thousands of little pieces when it breaks.
If you aim the flat side of a paving brick at a closed side window of any modern car and swing it with moderate force in an effort to break the glass, chances are your swing will end up with a disappointing "thud" and the window will stay intact.
If the window was slightly open and unsupported by the door frame, it may have flexed and caused the window to shatter, but this window was closed and your attempt failed.
You will get better results if you pinpointed the force by using a sharp spike to punch the window out. That's how most smash & grab attackers do it. They usually work as a team. One of them abruptly shatters the side window of your car in whilst another lunges into your car, grabs your valuables and runs away.
Your more-sophisticated smash & grab attackers have more tricks up their sleeve. They crush the white part of spark plugs (Aluminium Oxide Ceramic) into little shards that are exceptionally hard. When thrown with moderate speed at a side window these shards are harder than glass and release enough energy to shatter the glass on impact.
So when you're sitting in traffic at an intersection on your way home tonight with the sun going down and you have your handbag, wallet and cell-phone on the passenger seat next to you and you have a street vendor at your driver-side window distracting you, consider what his mate with the spark plug shards in his pocket is contemplating for the passenger window of your vehicle...
